Our Story

Atlas is our beloved, little red headed, feisty 4 year old, who was born with Down's Syndrome.  When he was born, i only got to hold him for a couple of minutes before they whisked him away.  He had a problem with his blood being too thick, which needed fixing quickly. Later it was also discovered that he had a duodenal atresia which required him to have surgery at only a week old. Our little trooper was in the NICU for 6 weeks and 3 days and began to improve healthwise, but still wasnt eating well because of low muscle tone.  After working with the hospital feeding therapist and researching what could work for him, we tried many things and finally were able to get him home. He is still working on perfecting his walking skills and balance but every day he gets better and faster!  He can't jump or run yet but he tries. ;) He knows some signs, as speech is very challenging for Atlas.

When you are in the hospital and they tell you that your child will have delays, or they might have this, or won't be able to do that.  What they don't tell you is that they will be beatiful, have long soft red hair, be a daddy's boy, love metal music, dancing, strawberries, icecream and that they will cuddle with you and stroke your face with the back of their hand.  That they will bring you unimaginable love, joy and peace on difficult days.  That they will teach you to slow down and enjoy the simple things.  Stop and look at a flower, watch a butterfly, smell a rose.  That they only need to smile or laugh and it will give you all the strength you need to get through the day.  That they will love giraffes, cows, and horses will be their favorite animals, and their favorite song will be old macdonald had a farm.  That you will take overwhelming pride in ever new thing they learn or do.  That you will miss them when you have to put them to bed at night and you can't wait to greet them in the morning.  The giggles, the laughs, the mischief, the wonder of a life that is different and unique to what others have.  They don't tell you that you will be their fierce protector and advocate.  That they will help you know the world in a slightly new way .  And that just maybe, you will need them MORE than they need you.

About The United Angels Foundation

United Angels Foundation (UAF) is a nonprofit, parent-to-parent support group for families of children with special needs (our Angels). UAF believes that the most effective way to support these children is by supporting the parents and guardians who are raising them. Our main goals at UAF are to provide interaction, education, and resources to our parents. We implement these goals through our newborn visits and packets, online chat forums, parent educational seminars, parent lunches, "Mom's Night Out", and youth and family activities. Funds raised from the Walk with Angels event will specifically go towards financing our educational seminars, activities (including Freedom at the Pool, Hee Haws, and our annual Christmas party, as well as age-related activities), and to administer our newborn and new member program. Please join us in advocating for all the angels in our community!
